What is Biodiversity Friend?

Biodiversity Friend is a voluntary certification standard developed in 2010 by the World Biodiversity Association for the assessment of biodiversity conservation in agriculture. Over the years, the Biodiversity Friend® Standard has been the subject of several revisions and has been developed in other sectors, such as beekeeping, forest management, green area management and territory management. What is the added value of the Biodiversity Friend certification?

The Biodiversity Friend certification was created by the World Biodiversity Association, a non-profit association committed to the conservation of biodiversity.
The Biodiversity Friend certification allows the communication of one’s commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability. The Biodiversity Friend standards propose improvement actions for the protection of biodiversity and landscape and evaluate the impacts of agricultural and management practices on the conservation of biodiversity.

Can all Biodiversity Friend certified subjects use the trademark in communication?

The Biodiversity Friend® trademark can be used by subjects who have obtained certification from a Certification Body, in accordance with the Regulation of use of the trademark.

When the Biodiversity Friend® trademark, can be used on the product?

The Biodiversity Friend® trademark can be used by subjects who have obtained certification from a Certification Body on the fresh product or on processed products in compliance with the Regulation of use of the trademark. Special requirements are provided for processed products and for products that have undergone transformation, processing or packaging. For processed products, please read the following question-answer. Product labels must always be authorized by WBA by sending the approval request to licence@biodiversityfriend.org.

Under what conditions is the use of the Biodiversity Friend® trademark allowed on processed products?

The use of the Biodiversity Friend® trademark is allowed on processed products when deriving from small local productions (SLP), when deriving from 100% Biodiversity Friend products or when deriving from products with at least 80% Biodiversity Friend certified products and percentage residue from organic/biodynamic products. Biodiversity Friend products used in transformation must always be subjected to traceability and mass balance verification by the Certification Body, with the exception of SLPs for which verification is not required.
If the Biodiversity Friend products of which the processed products are made are also certified organic/biodynamic, it is possible to acquire the traceability and mass balance requirement from the CB.

If a subject participates in a local biodiversity project, can use the trademark on the product?

Subjects participating in a local biodiversity project can use the trademark on the product provided that the individual companies involved demonstrate that they have carried out the provisions for the use of the trademark on transformed, processed and packaged products. Normally this activity involves the signing of a new contract between the Certification Body and the applicant.

In which countries is the Biodiversity Friend® trademark valid?

The Biodiversity Friend® trademark, owned by the World Biodiversity Association, is an individual trademark, registered on 1 July 2010 at the Camera di Commercio Industria Artigianato e Agricoltura of Verona. At an international level, the trademark is valid in all countries of the European Community, in the People’s Republic of China, in the United Kingdom and in Australia.
